Patrick McCaughey III, who cooperated with January 6 insurrectionists Federico Klein and Stephen Cappuccio by using a stolen police shield to pin Washington D.C. police officer Daniel Hodges against a doorframe, was sentenced in April 2023 to seven years in prison.
McCaughey, according to court documents, was one of several rioters involved in the assault of Hodges.
McCaughey pinned Hodges to a door with a police shield while Cappuccio ripped Hodges’ gas mask off.
The assault on police officer Hodges provided one of the most violent images of the January 6 insurrection.
U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden described McCaughey as a “poster child of all that was dangerous and appalling about” the January 6 riot.
“Your actions are some of the most egregious crimes that were committed on that dark day,” the judge told McCaughey.
McCaughey expressed shame in the courtroom.
“I’m sorry that I conducted myself less like a citizen and more like an animal that day,” he said.
