Welcome to democracy, which, if you believe Thomas Jefferson, depends on voters being informed.
Jefferson’s argument runs counter to that of Donald Trump, Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway, and other con artists who believe that facts are no different from “alternative facts” or shit you make up.
In this post, I include the names for all – or at least most — of the sources I use in my blog. For a democracy to function voters must have faith in their sources of information – and this involves knowing the sources of your information.
I’m a professor of journalism at Indiana University-Indiana, where I teach a course called Fake News. My Fake News course was inspired by Donald Trump, who claimed to have invented the term “fake news.” He didn’t. Media critic Craig Silverman used the term long before Trump did.
Trump weaponized “fake news.” Trump learned from Adolf Hitler who used the German phrase “lugenpresse” or “lying press” to discredit the press by calling it “the enemy of the people.” The objective, for Hitler and Trump, was for their supporters to believe their lies over facts published in the press The Washington Post reported that Trump made more than 30 thousand lies or misleading claims in his four years as president. The newspaper posts those lies/misstatements on its website.
Fake news – or shit people make up – has become a cancer and it is metastasizing in the body republic. We need to teach Media Literacy beginning in kindergarten so children, who frequently become adults, so they can determine what it real and what is not and become informed voters.
We must be able to determine if our news is credible or not. To do so, we need to know the source of our information. This is what I tried to do here
I tell my students that their sources matter. I tell them to include sources for any information they include. I also tell them all sources are not equal.
Here are the sources I’ve used so far in my blog.
