Van der Zwaan was the first person sentenced in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation that scrutinized ties between the Trump campaign and Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, NBC News reported.
“What I did was wrong. I apologize to the court, my wife and my family,” he told the judge.
The special counsel’s office accused van der Zwaan with working with Gates, Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort and Konstantin Kilimnik, who federal agents have identified as a former Russia intelligence officer.
Van der Zwaan’s father-in-law is German Khan, a Ukrainian-Russian billionaire.
